Why choose a Holistic Nutritionist?
Nutrition consulting addresses the mind, body, emotion and spirit; focusing on the whole person, rather than isolated symptoms and named diseases.
The study of holistic nutrition is focused on food quality, preventative health, natural health, sustainable agriculture, traditional whole foods and nutrient dense superfood.
The focus of holistic nutrition is to study the quality of the diet and lifestyle, as opposed to measuring nutrients or calories in the diet. We recognize that there is more to the question of nourishment than "what is eaten".
Apart from the quality of the diet, we keep in mind for example:
- That how the body digests and assimilates what is taken in, is as important, if not more, than the particular dietary philosophy that one subscribes to.
- Certain excesses in a person's diet or lifestyle, can deplete certain nutrients. Therefore, while a person is getting adequate milligrams or micrograms of a named nutrient, that doesn't mean that they have an adequate supply of it. We look at eating habits, the quality, type and proportion of the foods that are chosen, and how food can best be prepared for optimal nutrient density and absorption.
- Instead of using blood tests to assess deficiencies and excesses, we use non invasive symptomatology which points to imbalances, before they become severe enough to show in a blood test (blood tests are not the best indication of deficiency since the blood is the #1 priority to maintain homeostasis, therefore it is the last place to show deficiency). For example a blood test could show adequate blood calcium levels, but a bone density test would need to be undertaken to show that indeed the body is favouring the blood over the bone in the distribution of calcium. As another example, fluctuations in body temp are a better indication of the health of the thyroid than a blood test. The thyroid temp test, indicates whether or not the thyroid is moving toward hypothyroidism or not, therefore empowering the individual to support the thyroid nutritionally to prevent hypo or hyperthyroidism.
- Each person's biochemical individuality and current state of health is unique, therefore, each person has unique requirements. Adequate nutrient levels for one person, may not be optimal for another.
- We do not subscribe to any particular dietary dogma and recognize that the perfect diet is unique to the individual and continually changes, as factors in that person's life changes.
- We recognize the energetic qualities of food and use the traditional wisdom of both Chinese and Ayurvedic systems of health when creating a healing diet. For example, in western theory, honey would not be beneficial for someone struggling with Candida, while a raw unpasteurized honey actually has a drying effect on the body that can counter Candida (being a moist condition) in small amounts. Therefore a person with Candida may do fine with a very small quantity of honey in their diet even when they should avoid high glycemic carbohydrates.
Holistic Nutrition as An Adjunct to other Therapies
We acknowledge that nutrition is only one aspect of creating and maintaining optimum health, but we don't minimize or underestimate the subtle, yet compounding effects, that poor lifestyle and dietary choices have on one's energy level, feelings of well being and overall state of health.
The services of a holistic nutritionist can stand on their own, and can be a great adjunct to other systems of health, such as western medicine, TCM, herbology, homeopathy, chiropractic and massage therapy. As an adjunct to other therapies, we bring balance into the nutrition component of your healing path, making for deeper and longer lasting improvements with other modalities. Certain diet and lifestyle choices have an affinity to either support or diminish the level of health and well-being that can be attained in the long term.
